Changes to the settings and updates of the Victron Phoenix Smart IP43 Charger during software updates can be made with any Bluetooth-capable smartphone, tablet or other device.
Victron Phoenix Smart (1+1) has two outputs for charging two battery banks. The second output is for charging the starter battery. Consequently, it is limited to 3 A and has a slightly lower output voltage to maintain the usually full starter battery.
Victron Phoenix Smart (3): has three full current outputs for charging 3 battery banks. All outputs can supply the full rated output current.
Automatic voltage compensation
The Victron Phoenix Smart IP43 Charger compensates for a voltage drop on the DC cables by slightly increasing the output voltage as the DC current rises. Refer to the manual for more details.
Adaptive five-step charging algorithm: constant current ("bulk") phase, constant voltage ("absorption") phase, recondition phase, float phase, storage phase
The Victron Phoenix Smart IP43 Charger has probably the best known "adaptive"' battery management system, which can be adapted to different battery types. "Adaptive" means that the charging characteristic is automatically adapted to the type of battery usage.
The right amount of charge: variable constant voltage phase
If the battery discharge is low (e.g. a yacht connected to shore power), a short constant voltage phase is selected to avoid overcharging. After a deep discharge, the constant voltage phase is automatically extended to ensure that the battery is fully charged.
Preventing damage from excessive gassing: The BatterySafe mode
To shorten the charging time, the highest possible charging current together with a high constant voltage was selected. However, to avoid excessive gassing towards the end of the constant current phase, the charger limits the speed of the voltage rise after the gassing voltage has been reached. Less maintenance and aging when the battery is idle: the storage mode
The storage mode is always activated if no discharge has occurred within 24 hours. In storage mode, the charge retention voltage is then reduced to 2.2 V/cell (13.2 V for a 24 V battery) to minimise gas evolution and corrosion on the positive plates. Once a week the voltage is increased to the level of the gassing voltage. This creates a kind of equalizing charge that prevents electrolyte stratification and sulfation - the two main reasons for premature battery failure.
Also charges lithium-ion (LiFePO4) batteries
On/off control can be added by connecting a relay or open collector optocoupler output from a Li-Ion BMS to the remote on/off port. Alternatively, voltage and current can be fully controlled via Bluetooth.
Fully programmable charging algorithm
The charging algorithm can be programmed via Bluetooth or via the Victron VE.Direct interface. With the MODE button you can choose between three pre-programmed algorithms (see Technical data).
The Remote On/Off consists of two terminals: Remote H and Remote L. A Remote On/Off switch or relay contact can be connected between H and L. Alternatively, the terminal H can be pulled up, or the terminal L can be pulled down. See manual for details.
