A sail is a fabric which is used to drive sail boats and sailing yachts with the wind.
Sails are divided into different categories depending on their design and function. The most well-known are square sails and fore-and-aft sails.
In recent years there has been a huge development in sail fabrics. While sails used to be made out of plant-based textiles and then later out of woven synthetic fibres, laminated plastic sheeting is now increasingly being used for making sails.
