US racing yacht designer Farr Yacht Design (FYD) has been chosen by the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (ADOR) consortium to design an Open 70 yacht for next year's Volvo Ocean Race. The consortium is being backed by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA). The Emirate will also serve as a destination in the Volvo Race 2011/12 at the end of the second leg, which starts in Cape Town.

"FYD was selected because of its ability to tailor a yacht to our specific requirements", said Mubarak Al Muhairi, general director of ADTA. “We selected Farr Yacht Design out of six tender from the Middle East, Europe and the Far East."

The company has over 25 years experience in racing yacht design. Their boats won more than 40 world championship titles and had successes at major international sailing events like the Volvo Ocean Race, America's Cup, Vendee Globe and Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The FYD team, headed by company president Patrick Shaughnessy, brings significant expertise to the table. They worked extensively with the Telefonica team in the 2008/09 Volvo Ocean Race — an experience which could make Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing a competitive force. "In preparation for and during the 2008/09 Volvo Ocean Race, every member of the FYD team spent considerable time sailing a Volvo Open 70 yacht. The experience we gained has allowed us to view the design challenges a little bit differently. That real world experience adds skills to an always evolving set of tools that we bring to bear on any project," said Shaughnessy.
