From 3rd to 6th November 2011 the world's sailing elite will descend on the sailing stadium at Wansee, Berlin in order to take part in the 20th International edition of the Berlin Match Race, hosted by the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee (VSaW) and the Berlin Yacht Club (BYC). boatoon.com will be supporting the event as a media partner.
Why not stop by and experience the adrenaline, tension and effort firsthand. Daily Start: 10.00 am.
Alongside German stars Olympic winner Jochen Schuemann and world champion Markus Wieser - competing together with professional sailors Matti Paschen (America's Cup participant 2007 and 2009), Eberhard Magg and Rasmus Kostner (mainsail trim for sailing legend Russell Coutts) - the competition will also draw the current fourth in the world rankings Bjorn Hansen from Sweden and the 27-year-old Danish Match Race European Champion 2010 Mads Ebler. Two-time America's Cup and Olympic winner Jochen Schümann has, just before the first starting gun, changed the composition of his crew again. In addition to well-proven support by Ingo Borkowski - Schümann and Borkowski won silver medal in the Soling in 2000 at the Sydney Olympic Games - he has incorporated youngsters Hannes Baumann, Olympic aspirant in the 49 class and Dustin Baldewein, bowman in the 470 class, into the team. Helmsmen William Tiller from New Zealand and Keith Swinton from Australia will probably be making the longest journey to the event.
For the teams it's not just about the prize money - a total of 20,000 Euros, but also valuable world ranking points. The head-to-head races will take place on Class J 80 boats.
The anniversary edition of the Berlin Match Race offers spectators and visitors both impressive and spectacular duels on the water and a diverse land program with multimedia reporting. A heated and covered grandstand overlooking a large video screen, combined with professional live commentary from well-known sports presenters Nils Kaben and André Keil will bring the match race action onto land. About 6,000 spectators are expected to attend. For all those who are confident on the water, an audience boat will be ready and waiting at the harbour wall. A live online stream at www.bmw-berlin-match race.de will complete the spectator-friendly program and will enable enthusiasts to follow the action from wherever they are in the world.
