Nimbus Boats – production sites in Mariestad
With its workplace and production site in Mariestad in Sweden, Nimbus Boats is one of the leading boatyards of the world. In its production the boatyard embodies a successful synthesis of the most up to date technology and modern production methods with traditional artisanal craftsmanship and a team with a long history of cooperation. The Nimbus Boats headquarters, where the exhibition of the boats is found, is in the Royal Harbour in Göteburg, a little outside the city, in Långedrag.
Nimbus History – two parallel stories
The history of the Nimbus Boats boatyard actually encompasses two stories, which ran parallel to each toher. The first is about an amazing boat, while the second is about a dynamic company and its dedicated employees.
In the 60s Volvo Penta faced problems in marketing its motors. A specially made, comfortable excursion boat was to be the solution. The head of Volvo Penta, Harald Wiklund, ordered the ’perfect boat’ from the yacht builder Pelle Petterson, who called his design the ’Nimbus Boats’. The first test journeys on lake Vänern followed in September 1969. The Nimbus 26 was promptly named “Boat of the Year 1970“. In 35 years, a very long list of models bestowed Nimbus Boats with its distinguished name and made the brand a synonym for beauty, seaworthiness, and top quality.
On the eighth anniversary of the Nimbus Boats 26, the brothers Hans and Lars Wiklund founded their famous company under the name Nimbus Boats. Over three decades, with the help and support of competent and loyal employees, they built up one of the largest boat-building companies in Europe.
Nimbus Boats – continuous upswing
Traditionally, the boat-building market is heavily affected by economic booms and slumps, but Nimbus Boats has seen profit ever year. Furthermore the Nimbus Boats company is parts of a group of well-known brands like Maxi, Ryds, Storebo, and recently Paragon Yachts. The group has more than 300 employees today and an annual turnover of about 800 million Swedish Krons.
