The commonly used materials are wood, aluminium or steel. The original boat must be fully preserved, in order to be a classic. Any subsequent amendments may be done, but only as part of a restoration. If modern equipment, for example, fittings and carbon sails were to be added to the boat, it would no longer be a classic, but a vintage yacht.
